Case IH 2016 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) or Chassis Controller: Creeper solenoid short to ground or high voltage

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit that operates the creeper gear engagement solenoid. The system is seeing either a short to ground, an open circuit, or a voltage reading higher than the expected threshold, which prevents the solenoid from redirecting hydraulic oil to engage the creeper clutch.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Magnum
  • 7100 series
  • 7200 series
  • Series 4 Magnums
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Farmall
  • 7110
  • 7130
  • 7140
  • 7250
  • T6

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the creeper solenoid on the Transmission Control Valve (TCV) body for physical damage from field debris

  2. Verify the cab creeper on/off switch and associated linkage are functioning correctly and sending power to the solenoid

  3. Test the chassis wiring harness with a multimeter for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery voltage between the TCU and solenoid connector

  4. Perform a resistance (Ohm) test on the solenoid coil to check for an internal short or open circuit

  5. Lightly tap the solenoid with a hammer to check for mechanical sticking of the internal spool valve

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the creeper solenoid on the transmission control valve (TCV) block.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

  4. Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission's hydraulic system.

  5. Unbolt and remove the faulty creeper solenoid valve from the TCV body.

Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid will leak out.

  6. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid.

  7. Install the new solenoid valve into the TCV and tighten to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Turn on the tractor, clear the stored fault codes from the display, and test the creeper gear engagement to confirm the repair.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission Creeper Solenoid Valve

    1958159C2

Commonly fits older Magnum series like the 7110, 7130, 7140, and 7250

  • Solenoid Valve

    84286799

Used in various newer Case IH hydraulic/transmission creeper kits

  • PWM Solenoid

    48055262

Replaces 87739558, 87440439; PWM Solenoid for models with creeper and CCLS pumps (e.g., T6/Maxxum equivalents)
