Case IH 2021 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Chassis Controller: Chassis Harness Error / Transmission connector disconnected

Issue description

The main electrical connection to the transmission has been lost. The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a loose or disconnected transmission bulkhead connector, or a severed wire within the chassis harness.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Steiger
  • Case IH Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Locate the transmission bulkhead connector (the main electrical pass-through connector on the transmission housing). Ensure it is fully seated, locked, and not physically damaged.

  2. Inspect the chassis harness routing from the TCU to the transmission for any visible damage, chafing against the frame, or breaks.

  3. Disconnect the bulkhead connector and inspect the internal pins. Look for pushed-back pins, bent terminals, moisture intrusion, or green corrosion.

  4. Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the harness wires between the TCU and the transmission connector to isolate any open circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Access the Connector

Locate the transmission bulkhead connector. You may need to remove shielding or access panels depending on the tractor model.

  3. Clean and Inspect

Disconnect the bulkhead connector. Clean both the male and female ends thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner.

  4. Repair Wiring/Pins

If the pins are corroded or damaged, they must be re-pinned. If the harness itself is chafed or broken (a common issue on high-hour machines), repair the broken wires using proper weather-sealed splicing techniques, or replace the affected transmission harness section entirely.

  5. Reassembly

Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (avoiding the pins themselves) to prevent future moisture intrusion. Reconnect the bulkhead connector, ensuring the locking collar or tab clicks securely into place.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use the tractor's diagnostic menu or a CNH scan tool (EST) to clear the inactive 2021 fault code.

  7. Test Drive

Operate the tractor through its gears to ensure the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
