Case IH 2021 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) / Cab Controller: Chassis Harness Error / Chassis harness disconnected
Issue description
The main controller has lost communication with, or detected an open circuit in, the chassis wiring harness, indicating a physical disconnection, a broken wire, a loss of power/ground, or a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus interruption.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- Maxxum
- Puma
- Magnum
- Optum
- Steiger
- MXM series
- JX series
- SR175B Skid Steers
- 450CT Compact Track Loaders
- 588H Forklifts
Check the cause
Visually inspect the main chassis harness connectors (often located at the cab firewall, near the transmission housing, or along the boom support) for physical disconnection
Disconnect the main harness plugs and inspect for bent, pushed-out, or severely corroded pins
Inspect the length of the chassis harness for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage, especially where it routes along the transmission and chassis
Use a multimeter to verify that the 5V reference, 12V power, and grounds are present at the harness junctions
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to ensure the network is intact
Inspect the main fuse box for blown fuses that supply power to the chassis harness
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery negative cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Disconnect
Trace the chassis harness to the main junction block or firewall connector.
Clean and Reconnect
If the connector is loose or dirty, spray the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reconnect the plug, ensuring the locking tab engages fully.
Repair Wiring
If a broken or chafed wire is found during inspection, cut out the damaged section and splice in a new wire using OEM-approved weather-sealed butt connectors and heat shrink tubing.
Replace Harness (If Necessary)
If the harness is severely melted, corroded, or damaged beyond repair, remove the retaining clips and route a new OEM chassis harness in the exact same path to avoid future chafing.
Restore Power
Reconnect the battery negative cable.
Clear Codes
Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard H-Menu/diagnostic display to clear the stored 2021 fault code.
Test
Start the machine and perform a functional test (e.g., check transmission shifting and hitch controls) to verify the code does not return.
