Case IH 2025 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU), User Control Module (UCM), or Engine Controller (ENG): Engine speed too high

The control module is receiving a signal from the engine speed sensor (crankshaft or camshaft position sensor) that exceeds the maximum expected RPM threshold or calibration limit. This can be caused by a genuine engine over-rev condition, a faulty speed sensor, or a wiring harness issue.

   Verify actual RPM using a diagnostic scanner (like Case IH EST or Jaltest) to determine if the engine is genuinely over-revving or if the sensor is reporting a false high value.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the engine speed sensor and the TCU/ECU for chafing, corrosion, or open/short circuits. Verify the 5V reference voltage (5VREF) to the sensor.

   Check for metallic debris built up on the magnetic tip of the speed sensor, which can distort the signal.

   Secure the machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate the engine speed sensor

   Depending on the specific engine model, it will be mounted near the flywheel/bell housing (crankshaft speed) or near the timing gear cover (camshaft speed).

   Disconnect and inspect the harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Inspect the connector pins for moisture, dirt, or corrosion.

   Remove the old sensor

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the old sensor out of its bore.

   Clean the mounting surface

   Wipe the mounting surface clean to ensure the new sensor seats at the correct depth.

   Install the new sensor

   Insert the new OEM engine speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reconnect the harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear codes and verify repair

   Connect the Case IH EST or diagnostic tool, clear the stored fault codes, and run the engine to verify that the code does not return and that the RPM reads accurately.
