Case IH 2035 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Wheel speed too high

Issue description

The control module is receiving a frequency signal from the wheel speed sensor (or transmission output speed sensor) that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold for the tractor's current operating state.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Operator Use: Ensure the tractor was not actually driven beyond its safe operating speed for a specific gear range (e.g., coasting downhill or exceeding the creeper gear speed limit).

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness leading to the transmission output speed sensor / wheel speed sensor. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or a short-to-power (12V) which can artificially inflate the frequency signal.

  3. Check the 5-Volt Reference: Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5-volt reference signal from the Transmission ECU. A reference voltage that is too high can skew the sensor readings.

  4. Inspect for Slipping Clutches: A mechanical mismatch in input and output speeds caused by slipping transmission clutches can sometimes cause the controller to misinterpret the expected wheel speed.

  5. Check Shuttle/Range Switches: Ensure the shuttle lever and range switches are operating correctly, as inconsistent gear lever status switches can confuse the controller regarding the expected speed.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    Identify the transmission output speed sensor or wheel speed sensor, typically located on the side of the transmission housing or the rear axle housing.

  2. Disconnect and Inspect

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  3. Test the Circuit

    Using a digital multimeter, check the continuity of the wiring harness back to the Transmission ECU. Test for shorts to ground or shorts to voltage.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    If the wiring tests good but the code persists (or the sensor outputs erratic resistance/voltage during a bench test), remove the sensor retaining bolt and pull the sensor from the housing.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new speed sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert it into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic scan tool (or the tractor's onboard armrest diagnostic menu) to clear fault code 2035.

  7. Test Drive

    Operate the tractor through its gear ranges to ensure the speedometer reads accurately and the fault code does not return.
