Case IH 2038 – Transmission Control Module (DR Module): High range PWM valve - short to ground or high voltage (24x24)

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical short circuit—either to the chassis ground or to a 12V power source—in the circuit controlling the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid valve responsible for engaging the high range gear.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Maxxum 110
  • Maxxum 115
  • Maxxum 120
  • Maxxum 125
  • Maxxum 130
  • Maxxum 140
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 150
  • Puma 160
  • Puma 210

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to ground or high voltage.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the High range PWM valve and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins inside the connector.

  3. Measure the resistance of the PWM solenoid coil with a multimeter. A reading near 0 ohms indicates the solenoid is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Probe the signal wire from the transmission controller to the valve to check for continuity to ground (short to ground) or voltage present when the circuit should be dead (short to high voltage).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the transmission control valve body and the surrounding area to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the High range PWM valve.

  4. Extract the Valve

Remove the retaining bolts holding the solenoid valve assembly to the side cover. Carefully withdraw the PWM valve from its bore.

  5. Inspection

Examine the bore for wear, damage, or metal contamination that may have caused the valve to stick or short out.

  6. Installation

Coat the O-rings of the new PWM valve with clean transmission fluid (Case IH Akcela Nexplore fluid is recommended). Insert the new valve into the bore and torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  7. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.

  8. Calibration

After replacing a transmission PWM valve, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration. Using the tractor's electronic display (H3/H8 menus), navigate to the transmission sub-system and run the calibration to determine the correct quickfill settings and current required for smooth engagement.
