Case IH 2039 – Transmission Control Module: High range PWM valve - open circuit (24x24)

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected a break in the electrical circuit (an open circuit) leading to the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid valve responsible for engaging the high range (or Clutch 4) in the transmission.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Transmission Control Module and the transmission control valve block for disconnected plugs, chafed/broken wires, or corroded pins

  2. Measure the resistance of the High range PWM solenoid valve to check for an internal open circuit

  3. If the electrical circuit is intact but the valve is sticking, remove the valve and check for oil blockages or contamination

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and the transmission oil is cooled to a safe working temperature.

  2. Clean the Area

Locate the transmission control valve assembly on the side of the transmission. Thoroughly clean the area around the control valve to prevent dirt from entering the transmission during disassembly.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the High range PWM solenoid valve. Remove the retaining bolts holding the PWM valve to the transmission side cover.

  4. Extraction

Carefully withdraw the valve assembly, noting the position of any gaskets or O-rings.

  5. Installation

Coat the O-rings of the new PWM solenoid valve with clean transmission oil (Case IH Akcela Nexplore fluid is recommended) and install the new valve.

  6. Reassembly

Reinstall the retaining bolts and torque to specification. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Calibration

Clear the fault codes. Warm the transmission oil to at least 60°C (140°F) and perform a transmission clutch calibration (H8 procedure) and quickfill adjustment to ensure proper engagement and smooth shifting.
