Case IH 2040 – MCM (Main Controller Module) / Transmission Controller: Inconsistent Range Lever Status Switches (R1 and R2)

Issue description

This fault occurs when the machine is moving, but both range lever status switches (R1 and R2) register as "off" (open) for longer than 3 seconds. As a result, the control unit detects that the range lever is in the neutral position even though a transmission range is physically engaged.

Check the cause

  1. Mechanical Travel Check: Depress the tip of the switch; it must close within 1 mm (maximum) of tip compression. If the tip exceeds 1 mm of travel before the status changes, the switch is faulty and must be replaced.

  2. Resistance (Ohmmeter) Check: Check for the correct resistance readings between the connector pins on both switches (Open Position: 2760 Ohms ± 140 Ohms; Closed Position: 560 Ohms ± 67 Ohms).

  3. Controller Check: If the switches test perfectly within spec, the fault may lie in the MCM (controller) or the wiring harness connecting the switches to the MCM.

Repair steps

  1. Remove switches

    Remove the range lever status switches (R1 and R2) from their mounting box.

  2. Position range lever

    Place the tractor's range lever into the HI (Fast) position.

  3. Measure distance D

    Using a depth gauge, measure the distance (D) between the end of the internal feeler and the inner face of the recess where the sensor is housed in the supporting box.

  4. Measure distance D1

    With the sensor in your hand, measure the distance (D1) between the end of the sensor button and the inner face of the sensor's hexagon nut.

  5. Determine travel C

    Determine the required sensor button travel (C), which must be between 2.4 mm and 2.8 mm.

  6. Calculate shim thickness S

    Calculate the required adjustment shim thickness (S) using the formula: S = D1 - (D + C).

  7. Install shims and test

    Install the correct thickness of shims, reinstall the switches, and test the tractor in motion to ensure the MCM properly recognizes the range engagement and the code clears.

    Always replace these switches in pairs if internal wear is suspected, and you must perform the manual shim calculation (S = D1 - (D + C)) when installing a new switch, as manufacturing tolerances on the new switch body will differ from the old one.
