Case IH 2040 – Transmission Control Module: Low range PWM valve - short to ground or high voltage (24x24)

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit for the Low range Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) valve. Specifically, the circuit is either shorted to ground or shorted to a high voltage source, preventing the valve from properly regulating hydraulic pressure to the low range clutch pack.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 210
  • T6000/SWB PUMA
  • Steiger
  • Farmall U
  • Farmall C
  • CVX
  • JXU

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Transmission Control Module and the Low range PWM valve for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the Low range PWM valve solenoid and verify that the controller's 5-volt reference and ground circuits are intact and not shorted.

  3. Enter the transmission diagnostic menu to test the clutch quickfill settings by shifting the shuttle lever to neutral, selecting 'Lo', and testing engagement with the clutch pedal.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn the key OFF, ensure the parking brake is engaged, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the transmission control valve assembly on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the Low range PWM valve (often grouped with C1, C2, C3, and C4 PWM solenoids).

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty PWM valve. Remove the retaining bolts securing the PWM valve to the control valve assembly.

  4. Preparation of New Part

Coat the new PWM valve components and O-rings with clean transmission oil (e.g., CASE IH AKCELA NEXPLORE FLUID) prior to assembly.

  5. Installation

Insert the new PWM valve into the housing. Tighten the retaining bolts to the specified torque value of 27 Nm.

  6. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical harness to the valve. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

Turn the key ON and clear the stored fault codes. Perform a transmission clutch calibration and quickfill adjustment to ensure the new valve engages the low range clutch smoothly without harsh tractor movement.
