Case IH 2040 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Clutch 3 solenoid - short to ground or high voltage (16x16) or Low range PWM valve - short to ground or high voltage (24x24)

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical short circuit (either a short to ground or a short to a high voltage/+12V source) in the circuit responsible for operating the Clutch 3 solenoid valve (or the Low Range PWM valve, depending on the specific transmission configuration).

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Puma series
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 210
  • MXU series
  • Farmall series
  • Magnum series
  • T5 Series
  • T5030-T5070
  • TL90A
  • TS-A series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the Clutch 3 solenoid valve to the TCU for faulty connections, loose, bent, or corroded contacts, and physical damage to the wire insulation.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the harness for a direct short to ground or a short to a +12V power source.

  3. Unplug the connector at the Clutch 3 solenoid valve and measure the resistance between the two pins on the valve-sided connector using an ohmmeter (should be approximately 2.5 ohms at 20 °C / 68 °F).

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the fault lies in the wiring harness, the solenoid itself, or the TCU.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a short to ground or high voltage is found in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness segment to restore proper continuity.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

If the resistance of the Clutch 3 solenoid is out of specification (e.g., significantly higher or lower than 2.5 ohms, or completely shorted internally), the solenoid valve must be replaced.

  4. Replace the TCU

If the wiring harness tests perfectly and the solenoid resistance is within the 2.5-ohm specification, the internal circuitry of the TCU has likely failed. The TCU must be replaced and reprogrammed/calibrated by a dealer if no other measure is effective.

  5. Post-Repair Calibration

After replacing the solenoid or TCU, a transmission clutch fill calibration must be performed using the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu or a CNH service tool to ensure proper engagement of Clutch 3.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Clutch 3 Solenoid Valve / Low Range PWM Valve

Replace if internal resistance fails the 2.5-ohm test.

  • Transmission Control Unit (TCU)

Replace only if the harness and solenoid test good but the short circuit code persists.

  • Transmission Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connector

Replace if the connector pins are corroded or the wiring is melted/shorted.
