Case IH 2041 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Clutch A solenoid valve open circuit or short to ground
Issue description
The controller has detected an electrical fault—either a broken wire (open circuit), a disconnected plug, or a wire shorting directly to the chassis ground—preventing the proper electrical current from reaching the Clutch A proportional (PWM) solenoid valve.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Maxxum
- Farmall
- Puma Series
- Maxxum Series
- Farmall Pro EP Series
- MX / TG Series
Check the cause
Visually inspect the Clutch A solenoid valve (often labeled Y23 or C028) connector for loose, backed-out, or corroded pins.
Disconnect the harness from the solenoid and the transmission controller, and use a multimeter to check the wiring for continuity from end to end.
Check for continuity between the signal wire and the tractor chassis to rule out a short to ground.
Measure the resistance across the pins of the Clutch A solenoid itself (an infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit/blown coil, while a reading of zero indicates an internal short).
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Ensure the engine is off and all hydraulic/transmission pressure is relieved before servicing the valve block.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the connector pigtail.
Replace the Solenoid
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining bolt holding the Clutch A solenoid valve to the transmission external control block.
Install New Solenoid
Coat the new solenoid's O-rings with clean transmission oil (e.g., Case IH Akcela) prior to assembly. Insert the new solenoid and tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque (typically 27 Nm).
Calibrate the Transmission
After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, you must perform a transmission calibration using the tractor's H-Menu or electronic service tool. Specifically, you need to run the "Clutch A quick fill adjustment" to allow the TCU to learn the electrical characteristics of the new valve.
