Case IH 2042 – Transmission Controller / ECU: Clutch 2 solenoid - short to ground or high voltage (16x16)

A hard electrical fault where the circuit controlling the Clutch 2 solenoid is either shorted directly to the chassis ground or shorted to a high-voltage power source.

   Inspect the transmission wiring harness between the Transmission ECU and the Clutch 2 solenoid for rubbed-through wire insulation causing a short to the tractor frame (ground) or an adjacent power wire (high voltage).

   Disconnect the Clutch 2 solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or melting that could bridge the circuits.

   Test the resistance of the Clutch 2 solenoid coil itself to check for an internal short in the coil windings.

   Note that if you are attempting a transmission calibration and a four-digit number beginning with '2' (like 2042) appears on the display, the calibration will be blocked. The electrical fault must be corrected before any clutch adjustments or calibrations can be performed.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission. Identify the eleven solenoids; they are typically marked with cast-in coding on the valve body (e.g., 1, 2, 3 or A, B, C). Locate the specific solenoid for 'Clutch 2'.

   Relieve Pressure & Disconnect

   Ensure the tractor is off, the battery is disconnected, and hydraulic pressure is relieved. Disconnect the electrical harness from the Clutch 2 solenoid.

   Remove the Faulty Component

   Depending on the specific valve block design, either remove the retaining nut to slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge, or unbolt the entire Pulse-Width Modulation (PMV) solenoid valve assembly from the valve body.

   Clean and Install

   Clean the mounting surface to prevent contamination. Install the new solenoid coil or valve assembly and secure the retaining nut/bolts.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the wiring harness securely.

   Warm Up the Tractor

   Reconnect the battery and start the tractor. The transmission oil temperature must be brought up to at least 60 °C (140 °F) before proceeding to calibration.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Clear the stored 2042 fault code. Perform a transmission clutch calibration (Quickfill Adjustment) using the upshift/downshift switches to select 'C2'. Adjust the quickfill setting so that engagement noise is minimized but response is not sluggish.
