2048

Case IH 2048 – Transmission Controller (Trans): Bottom of Clutch pedal switch or the bottom of clutch relay are short circuit

Issue description

The controller is receiving a continuous, uninterrupted electrical signal indicating the clutch pedal is fully depressed, even when it is not, due to an electrical short in the switch itself, the relay, or the wiring harness.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the bottom of clutch switch at the base of the clutch pedal assembly to ensure it hasn't collapsed or failed internally.

  2. Check the 2-pin electrical connector at the switch for melted plastic, water ingress, or corrosion.

  3. Trace the wiring harness back toward the transmission controller to check for rubbed or pinched wires shorting to ground or power.

  4. Locate the neutral/bottom of clutch relay in the fuse/relay panel and swap it with a known good relay of the same type to see if the fault code clears.

  5. Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test for continuity. If the switch shows continuity (closed circuit) regardless of whether the plunger is pressed or released, the switch is internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove any lower dash or steering column trim panels necessary to fully access the clutch pedal linkage and the bottom of clutch switch.

  3. Remove the Faulty Component

Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the switch. Unbolt or unthread the shorted switch from its mounting bracket. (If the relay was found to be the culprit during diagnostics, simply pull and replace the relay).

  4. Install the New Switch

Mount the new OEM switch into the bracket. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Reassemble and Power Up

Reinstall any removed trim panels and reconnect the battery.

  6. Perform Calibration

According to Case IH service procedures, whenever the clutch pedal switch is replaced, a transmission setup calibration must be performed. Run the 'Cal Pedal' routine (via the tractor's H-Menu or electronic service tool) to calibrate the new operating range of the clutch pedal.
