Case IH 2049 – TRANS (Transmission Controller / ECU): Wheel speed sensor open circuit, short to ground or high voltage

Issue description

The control module is failing to receive a valid rotational speed signal from the wheel speed sensor. The system has detected a hard electrical fault in the circuit, typically caused by a broken wire, a short to ground, a short to high voltage, or internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wheel speed sensor and its wiring harness for physical damage, chafing, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals.

  3. Check for continuity between the sensor connector and the Transmission ECU to rule out an open circuit (broken wire).

  4. Check for continuity between the signal wire and the tractor chassis/ground to rule out a short to ground.

  5. Turn the key ON and check the reference voltage at the connector to ensure the ECU is sending the proper voltage (typically 5V) and that it is not shorted to a 12V source.

  6. If the wiring harness tests good, test the internal resistance of the sensor itself to confirm internal failure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the faulty wheel speed sensor (refer to the specific model's service manual, as it may be located on the transmission housing, final drive, or wheel hub).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of its bore. (Clean any dirt or debris around the mounting hole first so it doesn't fall into the housing).

  5. Installation

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor (if equipped) with clean oil. Insert the new sensor into the bore and seat it fully.

  6. Secure

    Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks and locks securely. Use zip ties to secure the wire harness away from moving parts or heat sources.

  8. Clear Codes & Test

    Turn the ignition on, access the tractor's diagnostic menu (or use a service tool), and clear the inactive 2049 fault code. Test drive the tractor to verify the speedometer works and the code does not return.
