Case IH 2051 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Oil temperature sensor - open circuit
Issue description
The control module has detected a break in the electrical circuit for the transmission oil temperature sensor. When a circuit is "open," it has infinite resistance, which the controller typically interprets as a maximum voltage value (e.g., a full 5V return on a 5V reference circuit) because the thermistor is no longer pulling the voltage down.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the transmission oil temperature sensor body, electrical connector, and pins for physical damage, corrosion, or a disconnected plug.
Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the transmission controller. Look for chafed wires, cuts, or broken connections that would cause an open circuit.
Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the sensor's terminals. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the sensor has failed internally.
Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Probe the sensor connector on the harness side to ensure the controller is sending the proper reference voltage (typically 5V) and providing a good ground.
Repair steps
Prepare the machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.
Clean the sensor area
Clean the area around the transmission oil temperature sensor thoroughly to prevent dirt and debris from entering the transmission housing.
Disconnect the harness
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.
Repair the wiring harness
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire in the harness, repair the wire using weather-sealed splice connectors or replace the connector pigtail.
Prepare for fluid loss
If the sensor itself is faulty, place a small catch pan under the sensor area to catch any minor fluid loss.
Remove the faulty sensor
Use a wrench to unthread and remove the faulty temperature sensor.
Install the new sensor
Install the new OEM transmission oil temperature sensor. (If the sensor does not have pre-applied thread sealant, apply a tractor-approved thread sealant to prevent leaks). Tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Reconnect the harness
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Check fluid level
Check the transmission fluid level and top off if any fluid was lost during the swap.
Clear the fault code
Turn the key on, access the tractor's diagnostic menu, and clear the stored 2051 fault code. Start the machine and verify the code does not return.
