Case IH 2052 (177.04) - DEC – DEC, TCU, or INST: Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor - Short to Ground

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the sensor that is too low (typically near zero volts). This condition occurs when the sensor's signal wire is grounding out against the machine's chassis, another ground source, or if the sensor itself has suffered an internal short circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify active codes on the instrument controller or TCU (often displayed as 177.04, INST 13021, or INST 13031).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to chassis ground.

  3. Perform a disconnect test: unplug the electrical connector at the sensor. If the active fault code changes from 'short to ground' (177.04) to 'open circuit / short to power' (177.03), the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Perform a harness/controller test: if the fault code remains 'short to ground' while the sensor is unplugged, the short exists within the wiring harness between the sensor and the controller, or there is an internal failure in the controller itself.

  5. Inspect the sensor and harness connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

    Power down the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Clean area

    Clean the area around the sensor thoroughly to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission housing.

  5. Place drain pan

    Place a clean drain pan underneath the sensor location, as removing the sensor will likely cause some transmission fluid to leak.

  6. Remove sensor

    Unthread and remove the faulty transmission oil temperature sensor.

  7. Install new sensor

    Install the new OEM replacement sensor (ensure any required O-rings or thread sealants are applied as per OEM specifications) and tighten securely.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor.

  9. Check fluid level

    Check the transmission fluid level and top off any oil that was lost into the drain pan.

  10. Verify repair

    Reconnect the battery, turn on the machine, and verify that the fault code has cleared or changed to an inactive state.
