Case IH 2052 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU) or Instrumentation Controller (INST): Oil temperature sensor - short circuit

Issue description

The controller monitoring the transmission fluid temperature has detected an electrical fault in the sensor's circuit. The voltage returning from the sensor is either too low (indicating a short to ground) or too high (indicating an open circuit or a short to a power source).

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission oil temperature sensor's electrical connector for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  2. Trace the wiring harness back to the Transmission/Instrumentation controller. Look for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, or disconnected chassis harnesses.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for a short to ground or a short to a 12V/5V power source.

  4. Measure the internal resistance of the sensor across its terminals. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance) or completely shorted (zero resistance), the sensor has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for service

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Allow the transmission fluid to cool completely to avoid burns and relieve any internal pressure.

  2. Clean sensor area

    Clean the area around the transmission oil temperature sensor on the gearbox housing thoroughly to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the transmission.

  3. Place catch pan

    Place a clean catch pan underneath the sensor location, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out when the sensor is removed.

  4. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical bayonet/plug connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unthread and remove the faulty temperature sensor.

  6. Prepare new sensor

    Inspect the threads on the new sensor. If it does not have a pre-installed O-ring or thread sealant, apply an appropriate hydraulic thread sealant to prevent leaks.

  7. Install new sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the transmission case and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  8. Reconnect electrical connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  9. Check fluid level

    Check the tractor's transmission/hydraulic fluid level and top up any fluid lost during the swap.

  10. Verify repair

    Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes from the display/ECU, and start the tractor to verify that Code 2052 does not return and the temperature gauge reads accurately.
