Case IH 2054 (3509.04) - DEC – DEC: Sensor Supply VS1 reference - voltage too low
Issue description
The ECU detects that the voltage on the 5V supply circuit (VS1) has dropped below the acceptable specification (typically below 4.5V). This condition is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground within the wiring harness or an internally shorted sensor.

Check the cause
Key OFF, Engine OFF.
Identify VS1 Sensors: Consult the machine's specific wiring schematic to identify all sensors powered by the 5V Supply #1 circuit (e.g., Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor, Engine Oil Pressure Sensor, Cam/Crank position sensors).
Sensor Isolation Test: Disconnect one sensor on the VS1 circuit at a time.
Key ON, Engine OFF. Check the active fault codes or use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the disconnected sensor's 5V pin.
Evaluate: If the 2054 (3509.04) code goes inactive (or changes to a voltage high/open circuit code) and the 5V reference returns to normal after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.
Harness Test: If all sensors on the VS1 circuit are disconnected and the voltage remains low, the wiring harness has a short to ground. Inspect the harness for chafing, rubbing against the engine block, or pinched wires.
ECU Test: If the harness tests good (no continuity to ground when unplugged from the ECU), the Engine ECU's internal 5V driver has failed.
Repair steps
Isolate the Fault
Perform the diagnostic isolation test to determine if the culprit is a sensor, the wiring harness, or the ECU.
Repair the Wiring
If a short to ground is found in the harness, locate the damaged section. Cut out the damaged wire, splice in a new section using OEM-approved heat-shrink crimp connectors, and wrap the repair in protective loom to prevent future chafing.
Replace the Faulty Sensor
If a sensor was pulling the voltage down, remove the faulty sensor. Clean the mounting port, install the new sensor, and torque it to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Clear Fault Codes
Turn the ignition ON. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab display to clear the stored fault codes.
Verify the Repair
Start the engine. Verify that the 5V reference voltage remains stable at ~5.0V and that the 2054 / 3509.04 fault code does not return.
