Case IH 2054 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Sensor Supply VS1 - Signal wire shortcut to GND
Issue description
Fault code 2054 indicates that the 5-volt reference voltage is too low. This is typically the result of the signal or supply wire shorting to ground, or an internal short to ground within one of the sensors powered by that circuit.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Magnum 235–340 (Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Puma series
Check the cause
Verify the battery voltage and ensure the Transmission Controller is receiving proper power and ground.
Identify all transmission sensors that share the 5-volt reference circuit (VS1).
Use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage on the 5V reference wire at the sensors.
Perform a sensor isolation test: disconnect the sensors on this circuit one by one. If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal (5 volts) after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted to ground.
If all sensors are disconnected and the voltage remains low, test the transmission wiring harness for a short to ground between the TCU and the sensor connectors.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor and engage the battery disconnect switch.
Locate the transmission wiring harness and the sensors on the affected 5-volt reference circuit.
Remove the faulty sensor and install a new replacement.
Perform this if the diagnostic checks isolated a specific sensor as internally shorted.
Trace the transmission wiring harness along the chassis and transmission housing.
Look for pinch points, chafing, or melted insulation that is causing the wire to ground out if the diagnostic checks indicated a harness issue.
Repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Reconnect all sensors and the TCU harness.
Turn the battery disconnect switch back on, start the tractor, and use a diagnostic tool to clear fault code 2054.
Perform a functional test of the transmission to ensure the code does not return.
Parts you might need
(4)Transmission Wiring Harness
Replace or repair if the wire is chafed and shorting to the chassis.
Transmission Speed Sensor
Replace if internally shorted.
Clutch Potentiometer / Position Sensor
Replace if internally shorted.
Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
Replace only if the harness and sensors test good, but the module fails to output the 5V reference.
