Case IH 2056 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Low Range switch open
Issue description
The control module has detected an open circuit in the transmission's low range switch circuit, preventing the system from verifying whether the transmission is physically engaged in the low range gear.

Check the cause
Use the transmission module diagnostic mode (e.g., H5 switch diagnostics) to detect if the switch is registering as connected to the module.
Inspect the wiring and connector on the right-hand side of the transmission for broken wires or corroded pins. On Maxxum models, specifically check the Trans Control Supply wire (Wire A / 7000L) and the Transmission Low Range signal wire (Wire B / 7230).
Verify that the gear linkage is not out of adjustment, sticking, or broken. If it does not travel far enough to actuate the switch, it will log an open circuit fault.
Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test the resistance/continuity across the switch terminals while manually actuating it to see if it has internally failed open.
Repair steps
Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Locate the Low Range Switch, which is typically threaded into the right-hand side of the transmission housing.
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the switch.
Inspect the harness connector for dirt, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
If the switch failed the continuity test, use a wrench to unthread the faulty Low Range Switch from the transmission housing.
Install the new replacement switch and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new switch.
Adjust the transmission gear linkage (if necessary) to ensure the physical shift mechanism fully engages the switch when the operator selects low range.
Clear the fault codes from the TCU and test drive the tractor in low range to verify the repair.
