Case IH 2061 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Chassis/Armrest Controller: Forward / reverse synchroniser potentiometer - signal too high
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the Forward/Reverse synchronizer position sensor (potentiometer) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold, indicating a short to high voltage, an open ground circuit, or an internal sensor failure.

Check the cause
Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic screen (H-Menu, specifically H9 menu for Switch and Sensor Test Functions) to monitor the live channel for the F/R synchronizer potentiometer and see if the voltage is pegged high
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission-mounted F/R synchronizer potentiometer for rubbed-through wires shorting to power or a broken ground wire
Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify the connector is receiving the proper 5V reference from the ECU and has a solid ground (if power and ground are good but the code persists when plugged in, the sensor has failed)
Ensure the shuttle lever forward/reverse switches are operating correctly and not sending conflicting commands
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and turn off the battery isolator switch.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the Forward/Reverse synchronizer potentiometer on the side of the transmission housing.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the potentiometer. Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty potentiometer from the synchronizer shaft.
Installation
Install the new F/R synchronizer potentiometer. Ensure it is seated correctly on the synchronizer linkage/shaft so that its sweep matches the mechanical movement of the synchro. Secure the mounting bolts.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal is intact and the connector clicks into place.
Calibration
Enter the tractor's transmission calibration mode (often the H8 calibration procedure for CNH tractors) and follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the synchronizer clutches and potentiometers so the Transmission ECU learns the new minimum and maximum voltage values.
Testing
Clear the 2061 fault code. Start the tractor and test the forward and reverse shuttle shifts to ensure smooth engagement and that the code does not return.
