Case IH 2065 (741.05) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (UCM / Armrest Controller): Forward solenoid open circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected a lack of electrical continuity (zero current or infinite resistance) in the circuit that supplies power to the solenoid responsible for engaging forward drive.

Check the cause

  1. Coil Resistance Test: Unplug the forward solenoid and measure the resistance across the coil pins with a multimeter. A healthy Case IH forward solenoid typically reads around 8 to 9 ohms. If it reads open (infinite) or significantly out of range, the coil has failed internally.

  2. Harness and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the solenoid. Look for broken wires, rubbed insulation, or corroded/loose pins at the connector.

  3. Magnetic Pull Test: With the key on and the shuttle lever placed in the forward position, hold a steel screwdriver near the solenoid coil to feel for a magnetic pull.

  4. Swap Test: Swap the electrical connectors between the Forward (Clutch C) and Reverse (Clutch D) solenoids. If the fault code changes to 2066 (Reverse solenoid open circuit), the solenoid coil is definitively the culprit. If the code remains 2065, the issue is in the wiring harness or the control module.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the transmission shuttle valve assembly / external controls block. On many Case IH tractors (like the Maxxum series), this is located on the top or right side of the transmission, sometimes accessible from behind the cab seat or just ahead of the remote couplers.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to protect the transmission controller.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the forward solenoid (often the front-most valve on the shuttle block). Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem.

  4. Replace the Coil

    Slide the old solenoid coil off the cartridge valve stem. (Note: If the tractor was also dropping out of gear mechanically, it is highly recommended to unscrew and replace the entire cartridge valve body as well, as sticking valves can cause pressure switches to kick the tractor into neutral).

  5. Reassembly

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem, install and tighten the retaining nut, and plug the wiring harness back in.

  6. Calibration

    Reconnect the battery, clear the stored 2065 fault code via the cab monitor or diagnostic tool, and perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure if required by your specific model's service manual.
