Case IH 2066 (4216.05) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Reverse Solenoid - Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module is sending a signal to the reverse clutch solenoid to engage the transmission in reverse, but it is not detecting electrical continuity (an open circuit). As a result, the tractor will typically refuse to engage in reverse or may abort transmission calibration.

Check the cause

  1. Perform the Swap Test: Swap the electrical connectors between the Forward solenoid and the Reverse solenoid. If the tractor refuses to move forward but moves in reverse, the solenoid is dead. If it still refuses to move in reverse, the issue is in the wiring harness or TCU.

  2. Perform a Voltage Check: Back-probe the reverse solenoid connector. With the key on and the shuttle lever placed in reverse, verify system voltage (approx. 11-12V). Missing or millivolt-range voltage indicates a wiring or relay issue.

  3. Inspect the forward/reverse relays located in the right-hand dash panel. Ensure they click when changing directions and have not backed out of their sockets due to vibration.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness leading down to the transmission block. Look for wires packed with mud, chafed against the chassis, or damaged by debris.

  5. Verify that the magnetic neutral switch on the shift rods (if equipped) has not failed or been bypassed.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Locate the transmission control valve block. On many models, the forward/reverse solenoids are located on the left side of the transmission.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid block with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic circuit.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the reverse solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid/Coil

    Depending on the exact transmission, remove a retaining nut to slide the electromagnetic coil off the valve stem, or unthread the entire solenoid cartridge valve from the transmission block.

  5. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic oil (if replacing the cartridge). Thread it into the block and tighten to OEM torque specs, or slide the new coil over the existing stem and secure the retaining nut.

  6. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the 2-pin wiring harness. Start the tractor, allow the hydraulic fluid to warm up, and test the shuttle shift operation. Clear the 2066 fault code from the TCU memory.
