Case IH 2072 – Transmission Controller (Trans): Reverse switch input from the FNRP Pod is shorted to +12 Volts or the FNRP pod 5 Volt Reference.

Issue description

The transmission controller is receiving an abnormally high voltage signal (either 12V or the 5V reference voltage) on the reverse switch circuit. This means the system thinks the lever is commanding 'Reverse' when it shouldn't be, usually due to a failed internal switch or a short-to-power in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the Lever: Rapidly cycle the shuttle lever through all positions (Forward, Neutral, Reverse, Park) to temporarily free up a mechanically stuck internal switch.

  2. Monitor the Instrumentation Cluster: Turn the key to the 'ON' position (engine off) and watch the shuttle position display on the dash. If the 'Reverse' icon is lit while the physical lever is resting in Park or Neutral, the reverse switch has either failed closed internally or the wiring is shorted to power.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring harness from the FNRP pod (on the steering column) down to the transmission controller. Look for rubbed, pinched, or melted wires that could be bridging the reverse signal wire to a 12V power source or the 5V reference wire.

  4. Test with a Known Good Switch: Plug in a known-good FNRP switch. If the fault clears and the dash display matches the lever position, the original switch has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during component replacement.

  2. Remove Pod Covers

    Locate the FNRP pod on the left side of the steering column. Remove the retaining screws holding the upper and lower plastic covers of the FNRP pod together.

  3. Disconnect Harness

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the base of the shuttle lever assembly.

  4. Remove the Lever

    Unbolt the faulty FNRP shuttle lever/switch assembly from its mounting chassis on the column.

  5. Install New Lever

    Mount the replacement FNRP shuttle lever and secure the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Plug the wiring harness into the new lever. Reinstall the upper and lower pod covers, ensuring no wires are pinched between the plastic halves.

  7. Test Operation

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to 'ON' and verify that the dash display accurately reflects the lever's position in Park, Neutral, Forward, and Reverse without throwing Code 2072.
