Case IH 2076 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Flywheel speed sensor - open circuit

The control module is not detecting a continuous electrical path through the flywheel speed sensor circuit. The sensor monitors the rotational speed of the engine flywheel, which is critical for engine timing, fuel injection delivery, and transmission/torque calibration.

   Check the wiring harness and electrical connector at the flywheel speed sensor for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or corrosion (an open circuit often points to a severed wire rather than a failed sensor)

   Test the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the ECU/TCU for continuity

   Test the sensor itself for internal continuity using a multimeter (infinite resistance indicates the internal magnetic pickup has failed)

   Verify the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth (typically 0.5mm - 2.0mm depending on the engine) to ensure erratic readings are not caused by an improper gap

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the flywheel speed sensor, which is mounted on the side of the engine block near the bell housing/flywheel.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.

   Remove

   Remove the retaining screw/bolt holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

   Clean

   Wipe the mounting surface clean to ensure no dirt or debris falls into the flywheel housing.

   Install

   Insert the new flywheel speed sensor into the port, ensuring it seats completely flush.

   Secure

   Install the retaining bolt and tighten it to the specified torque.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor.

   Calibrate

   Clear the fault codes. If working on a tractor with a CVT or Powershift transmission, you may need to repeat the transmission/torque calibration procedure, as the TCU requires a baseline reading from the new sensor.
