Case IH 2077 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Flywheel speed sensor – short circuit

Issue description

The control module is detecting an electrical short in the sensor's circuit (either shorted to ground or to a high voltage source), which prevents the system from accurately monitoring the engine/flywheel RPM.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger series
  • Magnum series
  • Puma series
  • MX/TG series
  • CX series
  • AFX8010
  • Axial-Flow series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the flywheel speed sensor for visible damage, rubbing, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground or a short to a voltage source.

  2. Check the ECU module connector pins (e.g., X192 pins 1 & 13) and the sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  3. Test the sensor's signal and reference wires with a multimeter to confirm if the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the sensor itself.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Power down the machine and ensure the battery is disconnected if required by standard safety procedures.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the flywheel speed sensor on the engine bell housing/flywheel area. (On some models, you may need to remove a starter motor heat shield or cover to access it).

  3. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the flywheel speed sensor electrical connector from the main engine wiring harness.

  4. Remove retaining screw

Remove the retaining screw/bolt holding the sensor in place.

  5. Remove sensor

Detach and pull out the faulty flywheel speed sensor.

  6. Install new sensor

Install the new sensor, secure it with the retaining screw, and reconnect the electrical connector.

  7. Calibrate sensor

Clear the fault codes. Note that after replacing the sensor, you may trigger code 2124 ("Flywheel speed sensor not calibrated"). You must perform a damper/flywheel speed sensor calibration procedure via the tractor's display or diagnostic tool to finalize the repair.
