Case IH 2080 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission Controller: Speed sensor generic error

Issue description

The control module is receiving an implausible, erratic, or missing signal from the transmission/ground speed sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Farmall Series (40, 45, 50 Tractors with Cab and CVT Transmission)
  • Case IH Puma Series (Puma 165)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series (100, 115, 130, 140)
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Quadtrac Series

Check the cause

  1. Locate the speed sensor (usually mounted on the side of the transmission housing or near the rear axle) and check the sensor tip for heavy metallic debris buildup, which can disrupt the magnetic pickup.

  2. Inspect the 3-wire pigtail and main harness connector for moisture, corrosion, or frayed wires caused by vibration or field debris.

  3. Ensure the sensor tip maintains proper clearance from the internal tone ring/gear. Check for a loose mounting bolt that can cause the sensor to back out, resulting in a dropped signal.

  4. Clear the diagnostic codes via the tractor's diagnostic menu and test drive at various speeds to see if the code returns or if the speedometer drops out erratically.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Identify the transmission speed sensor on the transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to protect the TCU.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

Unplug the electrical connector from the speed sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the housing. Carefully twist and pull the old sensor out of the transmission block.

  5. Prep the Area

Clean the mounting port on the transmission to ensure dirt does not fall into the gearbox and that the new sensor will seat flush.

  6. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new transmission speed sensor (ensure the O-ring/weather seal is lubricated and properly seated).

  7. Secure and Reconnect

Install the mounting bolt and torque to standard specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks.

  8. Final Testing

Reconnect the battery, clear the stored 2080 fault code from the computer, and test the tractor's operation at various speeds to verify proper transmission shifting and speedometer function.
