Case IH 2080 - UCM – UCM (Universal Control Module) / Transmission Controller (CCM): Speed sensor generic error

This is a generic fault indicating that the control module is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing signal from a speed sensor (which can include the PTO speed sensor, axle speed sensor, or transmission/flywheel speed sensor, depending on the machine's configuration).

   Use the on-board diagnostic menu or a service tool to monitor live data and identify which specific speed sensor (e.g., PTO, axle, or transmission) is dropping its signal.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the UCM and the suspect speed sensor for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to 12V.

   Check the sensor connector for moisture, dirt, or damaged pins, which commonly cause erratic generic errors.

   Measure the resistance and voltage of the sensor to verify if it is internally shorted or open before replacing it.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes to the UCM.

   Locate the Sensor

   Access the faulty speed sensor (e.g., the PTO twist/speed sensor is typically located on the right side of the rear axle housing near the hydraulic cylinder; transmission speed sensors are mounted on the hydrostatic housing).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the wiring harness connector from the sensor.

   Remove

   Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the speed sensor and carefully pull the sensor out of its housing.

   Install

   Insert the new OEM speed sensor and tighten the retaining hardware to the specified torque.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the connector clicks and locks into place.

   Clear and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic service switch/tool to clear the 2080 fault code. Perform a test drive or engage the PTO/transmission to verify the speed sensor is reading correctly and the code does not return.
