Case IH 2081 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): 4 / 5 range synchroniser potentiometer - signal high

The transmission control system is receiving a voltage signal from the 4/5 range synchronizer potentiometer that exceeds the maximum expected threshold, typically indicating a short to power (12V), a broken ground circuit, or an internally failed potentiometer.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Transmission ECU and the 4/5 synchronizer potentiometer for rubbed wires causing a short to a 12V power source or a broken ground wire.

   Disconnect the potentiometer and check the connector for water ingress, bent pins, corrosion, or factory paint damage ('painted through production').

   Use a multimeter to back-probe the synchronizer potentiometer signal wire to verify if the voltage is stuck high or if it sweeps smoothly when the synchronizer moves.

   Check for mechanical binding, as a very tight or sticky synchronizer assembly can sometimes cause out-of-range errors.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the 4/5 range synchronizer potentiometer by removing the transmission side cover where the synchronizer operating pistons and linkages are housed.

   Test/Replace the Potentiometer

   If the wiring harness tests good but the sensor voltage remains out of range or static, remove the faulty potentiometer and linkage. Install the new rotary position sensor.

   Inspect the Synchronizer

   While the side cover is off, inspect the seals of the operating cylinder and ensure the synchronizer linkage moves freely without binding.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the transmission side cover and reconnect the sensor harness.

   Transmission Calibration

   Perform the mandatory transmission calibration procedure via the tractor's 'H-Menu' onboard diagnostics (H1 Calibration procedures). Ensure the transmission oil temperature is between 10°C and 60°C (or as specified by the dash prompt) to successfully complete the calibration.
