Case IH 2082 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): 4 / 5 range synchroniser potentiometer - signal low
Issue description
The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the 4/5 range synchronizer position sensor (potentiometer) that has dropped below the acceptable calibrated minimum threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground in the signal wire, an open circuit, a failed potentiometer, or a mechanical issue preventing the synchronizer from reaching its expected position.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the 4/5 range synchronizer potentiometer and the Transmission Controller for rubbed wires, corrosion, or loose pins
Disconnect the potentiometer and turn the key ON to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and has a solid ground
Test the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the TCU for an open circuit or a short to ground
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the potentiometer while manually actuating it (if removed) to check for dead spots or an internal short
Ensure the synchronizer mechanism inside the transmission is not mechanically binding, which could prevent the sensor from reading the full range of motion
Attempt to run a transmission calibration via the tractor's diagnostic H-Menu to see if the sensor is simply out of its calibrated range
Repair steps
Secure the machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn the engine off, and remove the key.
Locate the sensor
Locate the 4/5 range synchronizer potentiometer on the side of the transmission housing.
Clean the area
Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.
Disconnect the harness
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the potentiometer.
Remove the potentiometer
Remove the retaining bolts/hardware securing the potentiometer to the transmission housing and carefully pull the sensor straight out.
Install the new potentiometer
Install the new potentiometer. Crucial Step: Ensure the drive tang or slot on the new sensor aligns perfectly with the synchronizer shaft inside the transmission before tightening the bolts.
Secure and reconnect
Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness.
Perform transmission calibration
Turn the key ON and use the tractor's onboard display (or a dealer electronic service tool) to perform a Transmission Calibration. The TCU must learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values for the new potentiometer.
