Case IH 2084 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): 5-8 range synchroniser engaged error
Issue description
Occurs when the transmission controller detects that the 5-8 range synchronizer is engaged when it has not been commanded to do so. This is typically caused by a faulty synchronizer potentiometer sending an incorrect position signal, a sticking/faulty synchronizer solenoid, a mechanically stuck synchronizer assembly, or internal hydraulic leakage within the transmission.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Maxxum
- Puma
- Steiger
- Farmall
- MXM
Check the cause
Use a voltmeter or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display (H-Menu) to check the signal voltage of the 5-8 synchronizer potentiometer. Verify if the signal is out of range or if the sensor has been damaged.
Attempt to run the transmission calibration procedure first, as the automated shifting can sometimes free up a stuck synchronizer.
Inspect the wiring harnesses for the 5-8 range synchronizer solenoid and potentiometer. Ensure the connectors have not been damaged, shorted, or accidentally swapped with the 1-4 range connectors.
Perform a 5-8 Range Synchroniser Pressure Test to check for internal hydraulic leaks or a stuck operating piston.
Repair steps
Access the Transmission
Slide the operator seat fully rearward, remove the rubber floor mat, and remove the cab floor panel to access the top/side of the transmission and the test ports.
Install Test Fittings
Remove the test port plug for the 5-8 range. Install the Case IH quick-release fitting/adaptor into the 5-8 range test port.
Check Pressures
Attach a pressure gauge (e.g., 0-40 bar or 0-250 bar gauge) using a gauge hose and quick-release coupler. Start the tractor and monitor the hydraulic pressure to the synchronizer circuit to determine if the solenoid is functioning or if there is a pressure bleed-off indicating a blown seal.
Replace External Sensors/Valves
If the pressure is incorrect or the electrical signal is dead, replace the 5-8 range synchroniser solenoid or the synchroniser potentiometer located on the exterior of the transmission housing.
Internal Inspection
If the solenoid and potentiometer are functioning but the synchronizer is mechanically stuck, remove the transmission side cover. Inspect the synchroniser operating piston, linkage, and seals for physical damage or binding.
Reassembly
Replace any faulty hard parts or seals. Reinstall the side cover and cab floor panel. Top off any lost transmission oil with the specified fluid.
Final Calibration
Clear the fault codes and perform a full transmission calibration so the TCU can learn the engagement points of the new or repaired synchronizer.
