2085

Case IH 2085 – Transmission Control Module: 1-4 range synchroniser solenoid - open circuit

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the solenoid responsible for engaging the 1-4 gear range synchroniser is incomplete, broken, or disconnected. Because the circuit is open, the control module cannot send the necessary electrical current to actuate the solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 210
  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • Farmall 115U
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50

Check the cause

  1. Access On-Board Diagnostics: Use the tractor's display to enter the H2 / H3 menus to view stored calibration values and select specific transmission sub-systems.

  2. Attempt Calibration: Try to perform a Quick Fill Time Adjustment for the transmission clutches. If code 2085 is displayed, the physical fault condition must be corrected before adjustment can be successfully performed.

  3. Circuit Testing: Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission side cover or bell housing where the solenoids are located for unplugged connectors, severed wires, or severe corrosion.

  4. Solenoid Continuity Test: Unplug the 1-4 range synchroniser solenoid and test it with a multimeter. If the solenoid lacks continuity (infinite resistance), the internal coil is broken.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the 1-4 range synchroniser solenoid, typically located either in the bell housing or inside the transmission side cover depending on the model.

  2. Wiring Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector pin in the harness, repair the wiring fault and securely reconnect the harness.

  3. Solenoid Replacement

If the solenoid failed the continuity test, remove the retaining hardware securing the faulty solenoid valve to the transmission valve body/housing.

  4. Install New Part

Insert the replacement transmission solenoid valve, tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specs, and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Recalibrate

Clear the fault codes. Enter the H2/H3 diagnostic menus and perform the transmission clutch and synchroniser calibration (Quick Fill Time Adjustment). Test the quick-fill setting by shifting the shuttle lever to forward and slowly releasing the clutch pedal to ensure smooth tractor movement without error codes.
