Case IH 2085 (6155.05) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Vehicle Control Unit (VCU): Synchro 4 solenoid open circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected a break in the electrical circuit for the solenoid responsible for engaging the 4th synchronizer in the transmission. An open circuit indicates infinite resistance, meaning electrical current cannot flow through the circuit. This is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or a failed (burnt out) internal coil within the solenoid itself. When this occurs, the transmission will likely fail to shift into the gears associated with the Synchro 4 circuit, and the tractor may default to a limp mode or neutral.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission valve block, wiring harness, and the specific connector for the Synchro 4 solenoid for mud/moisture contamination, pulled wires, or corroded pins.

  2. Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the plug and measuring resistance across the pins (should be 5 to 20 ohms). If it reads 'OL' or infinite resistance, the internal coil is broken.

  3. Perform a harness continuity test between the solenoid connector and the TCU/VCU harness connector to check for broken wires or chafed sections if the solenoid tests within spec.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission valve block around the Synchro 4 solenoid to prevent dirt and debris from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt, bracket, or snap ring securing the solenoid to the valve block.

  4. Extraction

    Carefully pull the faulty solenoid out of the bore. Have a shop towel ready to catch any residual transmission fluid that drips out.

  5. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Gently insert the new solenoid into the valve block bore, ensuring it seats fully without pinching the O-rings.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

    Reinstall the retaining bolt or bracket and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks securely.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Turn the key on and use the tractor's onboard diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the 2085 fault code. Depending on the tractor model, you may need to perform a transmission clutch/synchronizer calibration routine before operating the machine.
