Case IH 2087 (6155.15) - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCU) / DEC (Drivetrain Electronic Control): Synchro 4 Solenoid - short to 12v

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting that the electrical circuit for the Synchro 4 solenoid is shorted to a 12-volt power source. This means the solenoid is receiving constant high voltage, preventing the controller from properly regulating the synchronizer for gear engagement. This usually results in a loss of specific gears, failure to shift, or the transmission defaulting to a limp-mode.

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring harness from the transmission valve block (specifically the Synchro 4 solenoid) back to the DEC module. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points where the signal wire might be rubbing against a 12V power supply wire.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Synchro 4 solenoid. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine off). Use a multimeter to check for voltage on the signal wire. If 12V is present when the controller is not commanding the solenoid, the harness is shorted to power.

  3. Measure the internal resistance of the Synchro 4 solenoid coil across its pins. Compare this reading to a known good solenoid on the same valve block (e.g., Synchro 5). An internally shorted solenoid coil can sometimes trigger this fault.

  4. Inspect the connectors at both the solenoid and the DEC module for water intrusion, oil contamination, or corrosion, which can bridge pins and cause a short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring harness

    If the issue is a shorted wiring harness, repair the damaged section using heat-shrink butt connectors and re-loom the harness.

  2. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  3. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the Synchro 4 solenoid (refer to your specific model's OEM service manual for the exact valve block layout).

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid with brake cleaner and compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring holding the solenoid in the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid out. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware. Torque the bolt to OEM specifications.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  8. Calibration

    Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic monitor to clear the 2087 fault code. Crucial step: You must perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure (often requiring the tractor to be at operating temperature) so the DEC module can learn the engagement profile of the new solenoid.
