Case IH 2091 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) / MTA CCM: Clutch 3 not calibrated

Issue description

The transmission control system lacks valid calibration data for the Clutch 3 (C3) quick-fill time. This can happen if a previous calibration failed, was interrupted, or if the transmission control module lost its memory settings, resulting in harsh shifting or delayed engagement.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Farmall

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission fluid temperature (must be at least 60 °C / 140 °F to allow calibration)

  2. Check for active electrical faults (a four-digit code starting with '2' during calibration indicates a standard error code, such as a short or open circuit in the Clutch 3 solenoid, which must be corrected first)

  3. Perform a safety check: ensure the parking brake is released and the area around the tractor is clear, as the tractor will move during the quick-fill clutch testing

Repair steps

  1. Warm up tractor

Warm the tractor up until the transmission fluid reaches the minimum 60 °C requirement.

  2. Enter calibration mode

Enter the transmission calibration mode (often referred to as the 'H' or 'HH' menu on the dash display).

  3. Shift to neutral

Shift the shuttle lever and range levers to neutral.

  4. Select Clutch 3

Use the upshift or downshift switches on the control handle to select 'C3' (Clutch 3). The lower central display will show the selected clutch and its current quick-fill setting.

  5. Test quick-fill setting

To test and adjust the quick-fill setting, shift the shuttle lever into forward and slowly release the clutch pedal.

  6. Observe reaction

Observe the tractor's reaction: Too much quick-fill will cause a noticeable, harsh tractor movement. Too little quick-fill will cause a slow, delayed response.

  7. Adjust quick-fill setting

Use the upshift or downshift switch to adjust the quick-fill setting. Depending on the transmission variant, the target setting is typically between 3 and 19 (representing 30 to 190 milliseconds).

  8. Save and exit

Once the engagement is smooth, depress the 'dimming' key (or equivalent save button depending on the exact cab display) to save the calibration value and exit the menu.

Parts you might need
