Case IH 21 – Armrest Controller (ARM) / Tractor Multi-Function (TMF) controller: Hitch Load Command potentiometer is failed in the Armrest Controller

The controller is receiving an invalid voltage signal from the potentiometer responsible for setting the 3-point hitch draft/load command. The signal is either out of the expected operating range, indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a physical failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Physically inspect the Hitch Load Command knob on the armrest to ensure the potentiometer shaft is not loose or disconnected from the lever/knob.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the potentiometer and the Armrest Controller circuit board for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires that could cause an open or shorted circuit.

   Attempt to run the armrest hitch calibration procedure. Check if the controller can read a valid voltage sweep (typically 0-5V or 0-8V) when the knob is turned. If calibration halts, it confirms a hard failure of the sensor.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working inside the armrest.

   Access the Armrest Controller

   Remove the screws securing the armrest control console cover. Carefully lift the cover to expose the internal wiring and potentiometers.

   Remove the Failed Component

   Locate the Hitch Load Command potentiometer. Unplug its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or mounting hardware securing the potentiometer to the console panel.

   Install the New Potentiometer

   Insert the replacement potentiometer into the console, align it with the knob, and tighten the retaining hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new potentiometer.

   Reassemble

   Carefully reinstall the armrest console cover, ensuring no wires are pinched. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibrate

   You must perform the armrest/hitch calibration procedure using the tractor's PROG/display keys. This allows the Armrest Controller to learn the minimum and maximum voltage limits of the new potentiometer.
