Case IH 2112 (741.17) - DEC – Drivetrain Electronic Controller (DEC): Forward Clutch Solenoid Low Side Driver (LSD) short to ground

Issue description

The Drivetrain Electronic Controller (DEC) has detected a Short to Ground on the Low Side Driver (LSD) circuit for the Forward Clutch Solenoid. This means the ground-side control circuit for the solenoid has bypassed its normal path and is touching a ground source, preventing the controller from regulating the solenoid. This often results in the transmission being unable to engage the forward clutch, slipping, or defaulting to a neutral/limp mode.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the Forward Clutch Solenoid for melted insulation, chafing against the transmission housing, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the DEC and at the solenoid. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the Forward Clutch Solenoid Feed wire (circuit 4014 or 4015, usually Blue or Blue/Green) and the tractor chassis (ground). Continuity indicates a shorted harness.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the Forward Clutch Solenoid. If resistance is near zero ohms, the solenoid coil is internally shorted.

  4. Inspect the female electrical connector at the solenoid for water intrusion, mud, or corroded pins that could bridge the circuit to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, turn off the engine, and turn off the battery disconnect switch.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (usually mounted on the side or bottom of the transmission housing). Identify the Forward Clutch Solenoid (refer to the specific model's hydraulic schematic to distinguish it from the Reverse or PTO solenoids).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Forward Clutch Solenoid. If the connector is damaged, it must be spliced and replaced.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolt or bracket holding the solenoid in place. Pull the solenoid straight out of the valve body.

  5. Install New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new Forward Clutch Solenoid with clean Case IH Akcela transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the valve block, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

    Install the retaining bolt and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Turn the battery switch back on. Use the tractor's H-Menu (diagnostic menu) or a dealer service tool to clear the DEC fault codes.

  8. Transmission Calibration

    Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure as required by the service manual to ensure the DEC learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid.
