Case IH 2121 (6155.17) - DEC – DEC: DEC: Synchro 4 Solenoid - LSD short to GND
Issue description
The Low Side Driver (the ground-switching side of the circuit controlled by the module) has experienced a short to ground. Electrical current is bypassing the intended load (the solenoid coil) and going directly to ground, which prevents the module from properly controlling the Synchro 4 engagement in the transmission.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness for visible damage, rubbing, or melting that could cause the wire to short against the tractor chassis.
Inspect the connectors at both the Synchro 4 solenoid and the DEC/TCU for loose connections, moisture ingress, or bent pins.
Perform a circuit isolation test: disconnect the wiring harness from the TCU and the Synchro 4 solenoid, then use a multimeter to check for continuity between the low-side wire (LSD) and the chassis ground. Continuity indicates a shorted harness.
Measure the resistance across the Synchro 4 solenoid pins to verify if the coil itself has failed and shorted internally.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent damage to the DEC/TCU during testing.
Isolate the Fault
Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the short is in the wiring harness, the solenoid, or the controller.
Repair/Replace Harness
If the multimeter test shows a short to ground in the wiring, trace the harness along the transmission housing. Repair the chafed wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the transmission harness section if the damage is extensive.
Replace Solenoid
If the solenoid coil fails the resistance test (internal short), drain the necessary transmission fluid, remove the retaining bolts for the Synchro 4 solenoid on the transmission valve block, and install a new solenoid. Torque to OEM specifications and replace any O-rings.
TCU Replacement (Worst Case)
If the wiring and solenoid both test perfectly, the OEM manual indicates a 'TCU Internal failure' of the Low Side Driver. The DEC/TCU must be replaced and reprogrammed/calibrated by a dealer.
Calibration
After repairing the circuit, clear the fault codes. You may need to perform a transmission calibration routine (as the DEC monitors clutch and synchro calibrations) to ensure smooth shifting.
