Case IH 2129 (5960.04) - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Odd Shaft Speed - short to GND

An electrical issue with the speed sensor responsible for monitoring the rotational speed of the odd-numbered gear shaft. A short to ground results in a loss of signal, preventing the transmission controller from synchronizing engine speed with the odd gear shaft during gear shifts, which can force the system to disable the odd clutch actuation to prevent mechanical damage.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the TCM and the odd shaft speed sensor for chafed wires shorting directly to the chassis ground

   Use a diagnostic computer to check the supply voltage to the sensor and monitor the live speed outputs of the odd-shaft, even-shaft, and input shafts

   Inspect the sensor and tone wheels for metal contamination (iron ore or metal shavings) generated by worn bearings or internal wear items

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery before servicing transmission electronics.

   Isolate the Short

   If the diagnostic tests reveal a wiring short to ground between the TCM and the sensor, repair or replace the damaged section of the transmission wiring harness.

   Access the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has failed internally. Locate the odd shaft speed sensor. (Note: In many DCT applications, the even and odd shaft speed sensors are housed together in a single unit body).

   Inspect Internal Components

   When replacing the sensor, carefully inspect the tone wheel blades or helical gear tips that the sensor reads, as these can be fragile. Clean any iron ore or metal shavings from the mounting area.

   Replace the Sensor

   Install the new speed sensor unit. If internal bearings are producing excessive metal shavings, they must be replaced to prevent the recurrence of the fault.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the fault code from the TCM/ECU and perform a calibration test drive.
