Case IH 213 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Oil Temperature Sensor Voltage is too low
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the engine oil temperature sensor that has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold (often below 0.29V). This condition is almost always caused by a short to ground in the sensor wiring circuit, a failed sensor that has shorted internally, or a severely corroded connector.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine Controller and the Oil Temperature Sensor for chafed insulation, bare wires touching the engine block, or pinched sections.
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for moisture, oil intrusion, or green corrosion that could bridge the pins and cause a short.
With the key ON and engine OFF, probe the sensor connector to verify a 5V reference voltage on the supply wire. If 0V, the wire is shorted to ground before the sensor or the ECU is not sending the signal.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the sensor's pins. If the resistance reads near zero (continuity), the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor. It is typically threaded directly into the engine block near the oil filter housing or main oil gallery.
Disconnect
Carefully depress the locking tab on the electrical pigtail and disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Using a deep socket or wrench, unthread the faulty sensor. Have a shop rag ready, as a small amount of engine oil may weep from the port.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten it to the OEM torque specification (do not over-tighten, as these are often brass fittings that can snap).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use your diagnostic tool/monitor to clear the ENG 213 fault code.
Test
Start the engine, check for oil leaks at the sensor threads, and verify that the oil temperature reads correctly on the cab display without the code returning.
