Case IH 2137 (6156.04) - DEC – DEC: Synchro 5 Solenoid - short to GND
Issue description
The electrical circuit controlling the Synchro 5 Solenoid has shorted to ground (GND). The controller is detecting zero or near-zero voltage on the circuit meant to power the 5th synchronizer solenoid.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the transmission valve block to the DEC/TCU for pinched wires, melted insulation, or rubbing against the transmission housing
Disconnect the harness at the Synchro 5 solenoid and inspect the pins for water ingress, dirt, or bent terminals
Perform a resistance test on the solenoid using a multimeter across its two pins. A reading near 0 ohms indicates the coil is internally shorted
Perform a harness short test with the solenoid disconnected and key OFF by measuring continuity between the solenoid power wire and chassis ground. Continuity indicates a shorted harness

Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually located on the side or top of the transmission housing, depending on the specific tractor model). Identify the Synchro 5 solenoid.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire, solder in a new section of equivalent gauge, and seal it with dual-wall heat shrink tubing.
Solenoid Replacement
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body. Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring holding the solenoid in place. Carefully pull the old solenoid cartridge out of the valve block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reassembly & Calibration
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery. Turn the key ON and clear the inactive fault codes using the tractor's instrument cluster diagnostic menu or the EST (Electronic Service Tool).
Final Step
Perform a transmission clutch and synchronizer calibration procedure as outlined in the operator's manual, as the DEC needs to learn the fill times and engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
