Case IH 2143 (519183.07) - DEC – DEC: Synchro S/M engage error - Mechanical System Not Responding Or Out Of Adjustment
Issue description
The transmission controller commanded the S/M synchronizer to engage, but the synchronizer position sensor (potentiometer) did not detect the expected mechanical movement, or the movement fell outside of the calibrated tolerance. This can be caused by a bound-up sensor, a failed shift solenoid, or internal mechanical wear.

Check the cause
Verify that the transmission oil (e.g., Hy-Tran Ultraction) is at the correct level and operating temperature. Cold oil can cause sluggish mechanical response and trigger false FMI 07 codes.
Inspect the synchronizer position sensors located on top of the transmission. Ensure they are not bound up where they pass through the transmission case.
Check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the synchronizer solenoids and potentiometers for corrosion, water intrusion, or broken wires.
Enter the tractor's diagnostic menu (e.g., the 'H' routines) and attempt a transmission clutch and synchronizer calibration to see if the system can relearn the synchronizer's end-stops.
Repair steps
Warm Up and Calibrate
Bring the tractor up to operating temperature (engine speed to 1200 +/- 100 rpm) and run the transmission calibration procedure via the instrument cluster or diagnostic tool. If the calibration fails and the code returns, proceed to hardware checks.
Test the Potentiometer
Disconnect the S/M synchronizer potentiometer. Test the sensor for erratic voltage or resistance sweeps. If the sensor is damaged or bound up in the case, replace it.
Test the Solenoid
Check the synchronizer shift solenoid for open circuits or shorts to ground. Ensure it is receiving the correct voltage when commanded by the DEC.
Mechanical Inspection (Internal)
If the electrical circuits, sensors, and solenoids are functioning correctly, the fault is internal. The transmission will need to be split to inspect the driveline for mechanical problems, such as worn synchronizer rings, a damaged shift fork, or a stuck dump valve.
Re-calibration
After replacing any sensors, solenoids, or internal synchronizer parts, you must perform a full transmission calibration to clear the code and teach the DEC the new engagement parameters.
