Case IH 2145 (518707.13) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission not calibrated
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the transmission control module has detected that the transmission clutches are not properly calibrated. This condition typically occurs if a new controller was installed but not calibrated, if a previous calibration procedure was interrupted or failed, or if the non-volatile memory (EEPROM) was cleared due to a voltage drop or software reset.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum Series (MX285, 340, 380)
- Steiger Series
- Puma Series
- MXU / Maxxum Series (MXU115)
Check the cause
Check fluid temperature: The transmission fluid must be warmed up to operating temperature (typically between 60°C and 105°C / 140°F - 220°F). The calibration will be rejected if the oil is too cold.
Check fluid level and filters: Ensure the transmission/hydraulic oil level is correct and filters are not restricted, as low pressure will cause the calibration to fail.
Check for active fault codes: Look for any other active fault codes (such as clutch solenoid circuit faults, speed sensor faults, or park brake switch faults). Any active transmission faults must be repaired and cleared before the controller will allow a calibration.
Check environment: Ensure the tractor is parked in a wide-open, flat area away from obstacles, as the machine may lurch or move slightly during the clutch engagement tests.
Repair steps
Access CONFIG MENU (Magnum Series)
Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within 10 seconds, press and hold the 'PROG' (or Enter) button on the keypad to access the CONFIG MENU.
Select TCU
Use the down arrow to highlight 'TCU' and press PROG/Enter.
Navigate to Clutch Calibration
Navigate to the 'ETC MENU' -> 'TRANS SETUP' -> 'Cltch Cal' (Clutch Calibration) and press PROG/Enter.
Verify oil temperature
The screen will display the oil temperature. If it is above 60°C (140°F), press PROG to continue.
Set engine RPM
Start the engine and increase the RPM to the specified calibration speed (usually between 1100 and 1300 RPM).
Shift to Forward
The display will prompt 'Shift to Fwd'. With the clutch pedal released (up), shift the shuttle lever into Forward.
Calibrate clutches sequentially
The display will prompt to calibrate the clutches sequentially (e.g., Odd, Even, Master). Press PROG to initiate each one. The tractor will automatically modulate the valves until it senses movement.
Shift to Park
Once all clutches are calibrated, the display will read 'Exit Cal' and prompt you to 'Shift to Park'. Shift the lever to Park.
Save calibration values
Reduce engine speed to low idle and turn the tractor off. This saves the calibration values to the non-volatile memory.
Initiate calibration mode (MXU / Mid-Range Series)
With the tractor off, hold the UPSHIFT rocker switch on the gear lever and start the engine.
Access CAL display
Within 3 seconds of starting, press the DOWNSHIFT switch. The lower dash display should read 'CAL'.
Set tractor conditions
Ensure the park brake is applied, range lever is in neutral, shuttle is in forward, and engine RPM is at 1200.
Calibrate synchronizers
Hold the UPSHIFT switch. The synchronizers will calibrate (counting 1 through 5) until the display shows 'END'.
Calibrate clutches C1 and C2
Release and hold the UPSHIFT switch again to calibrate clutch C1. Hold the DOWNSHIFT switch to calibrate C2.
Calibrate clutches C3 and C4
Shift into high range; use UPSHIFT to calibrate C3 and DOWNSHIFT to calibrate C4.
Store calibration
Turn the engine off to store the calibration.
