Case IH 2146 (519166.03) - DEC – Electronic Transmission Controller or Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Forward Clutch Pressure Sensor - short to high voltage
Issue description
A short to high voltage on a pressure sensor typically indicates that the sensor's signal wire is shorted to a power source or the sensor itself has failed internally, causing the controller to read maximum voltage. In Case IH transmission systems, forward clutch failures or hydraulic pressure losses prevent the directional clutch packs from locking up. This results in a condition where the machine may shift into forward normally but fail to move, move weakly, or lose pulling power under load, while the reverse gear continues to operate normally.

Check the cause
Hydraulic Pressure Test: Place a test gauge on the forward/reverse valve located under the transmission.
Compare Directional Pressures: Check the pressure readings in both directions. If the gauge shows good, stable pressure in reverse, but the needle jumps around and flutters in forward, it indicates a hydraulic pressure loss or a failure in the forward clutch pack.
Check for Slipping: Observe if the tractor acts like it goes into neutral after pulling a load. If dropping a gear allows it to pull again temporarily, the forward clutch friction discs may be worn or heat-damaged.
Repair steps
Diagnose the electrical circuit
Diagnose the electrical circuit to rule out a wiring harness short to the transmission controller.
Inspect the forward directional clutch pack
If the sensor and wiring are intact but hydraulic pressure is unstable, the transmission must be accessed to inspect the forward directional clutch pack.
Inspect hydraulic pressure control valves and oil pump
Inspect the hydraulic pressure control valves and the transmission oil pump for internal leakage.
Replace forward clutch friction discs and Belleville springs
Replace the forward clutch friction discs and Belleville springs if they show signs of excessive wear or heat damage.
