Case IH 2150 (519168.03) - DEC – DEC (Driveline Electronic Controller): Even Clutch Pressure Sensor - short to high voltage

Issue description

The transmission control module has detected that the voltage signal from the Even Clutch Pressure Sensor is above the normal operating range (shorted to a high power source, typically +5V or +12V). This sensor is responsible for monitoring the hydraulic pressure applied to the even-numbered gears' clutch pack in the transmission. When this signal is out of range, the controller cannot accurately regulate clutch engagement, which can lead to harsh shifting, skipped gears, or the transmission disabling the even gears entirely to protect the clutch packs.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the Even Clutch Pressure Sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to power.

  2. Disconnect the Even Clutch Pressure Sensor and inspect the pins on both the sensor and the harness side for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, check the sensor connector for proper 5V reference voltage and a good ground. Test the signal wire for continuity back to the DEC/TCU and ensure it is not shorted to the power wire.

  4. Perform a sensor swap test: Swap the Even Clutch Pressure Sensor with the Odd Clutch Pressure Sensor. Clear the codes and cycle the key. If the fault code changes to the Odd Clutch Pressure Sensor, the sensor is internally shorted. If the code remains on the Even Clutch circuit, the issue is in the wiring harness or the DEC itself.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Relieve hydraulic pressure

    Allow the tractor to cool and ensure all hydraulic pressure in the transmission circuits has been relieved.

  3. Locate sensor

    Locate the Even Clutch Pressure Sensor on the transmission control valve body/manifold.

  4. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  5. Prepare for fluid leak

    Place a catch pan underneath the valve body, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.

  6. Remove sensor

    Unscrew and remove the faulty pressure sensor.

  7. Install new sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid and thread it into the valve body. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  8. Reconnect sensor

    Reconnect the electrical connector and ensure the locking tab clicks into place.

  9. Top off fluid

    Top off the transmission fluid if a significant amount was lost.

  10. Clear fault codes

    Turn the key on and use the Pro 700/1200 display or a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes.

  11. Perform calibration

    Perform a transmission clutch calibration (specifically the Even Clutch calibration) through the tractor's display monitor so the TCU can learn the new sensor's baseline values.

  12. Test drive

    Test drive the tractor through all gears to verify smooth shifting and ensure the code does not return.
