Case IH 2158 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Critical low system pressure
Issue description
Indicates that the transmission or primary hydraulic system pressure has dropped below the minimum safe operating threshold. This code is often accompanied by related electrical codes (such as 2159 or 2160) if the root cause is a failed sensor rather than an actual mechanical pressure loss.

Check the cause
Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and condition. Low fluid is the most common cause of a critical pressure drop.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission system pressure transducer for pinched wires, rodent damage, or corrosion at the connector plug.
Check your monitor for related codes like 2159 (Open circuit) or 2160 (Short circuit to 5V), which indicate an electrical issue rather than a failing pump.
Verify that the pressure transducer is receiving its required 5V reference voltage from the control module.
Use a mechanical pressure gauge on the transmission test port to verify if the system pressure is actually critically low.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Resolve Fluid Issues
If the fluid is low, inspect the transmission housing, hydraulic lines, and remote valves for leaks. Repair any leaks and top off the system with Case IH Hy-Tran fluid.
Repair Wiring
If the connector is corroded or wires are frayed, clean the pins with contact cleaner or splice in a new connector pigtail.
Replace the Pressure Transducer
If the mechanical pressure is normal but the sensor reads low (or if the sensor fails a multimeter resistance test), locate the transmission pressure sensor on the transmission housing/valve block. Disconnect the wiring harness, unthread the old sensor, and install the new one. (Be prepared to catch a small amount of fluid).
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery, turn on the machine, and clear the fault codes. Run the tractor and verify that the transmission pressure registers correctly on the monitor and that the code does not return.
Internal Transmission Repair
If the sensor is good and mechanical pressure is actually critically low, the transmission will require a deeper teardown to inspect for a failed hydraulic pump, blown seals, or worn clutch packs causing massive internal pressure bleed-off.
