2160 (519174.03) - DEC

Case IH 2160 (519174.03) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Synchro 6-8 Position Sensor - short to high voltage

Issue description

The control module has detected a 'short to high voltage' on the circuit for the Synchro 6-8 Position Sensor. This typically means the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to the 5-volt reference wire or to battery voltage, or that the sensor has failed internally. This can result in the transmission failing to engage the synchro, leading to a loss of drive in gears 6 through 8.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum series (180, 210, 225, 235, 250, 340)
  • Maxxum series (100-140)
  • Puma series (115-210)
  • Steiger series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the sensor, linkage, and wiring harness where it routes to the top of the front/speed transmission for rubbed wires, corrosion, or contamination.

  2. Back-probe the sensor connector with a multimeter to verify it is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground.

  3. Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness and connectors while observing live diagnostic data on the tractor's monitor to check for intermittent voltage spikes.

  4. Verify that the sensor is not physically bound up where it passes through the transmission case, as this can prevent the synchro from engaging properly.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the Synchro 6-8 position sensor, which is typically mounted on top of the front/speed transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

Unbolt and carefully remove the position sensor from the transmission case. Inspect the port for debris or mechanical binding.

  5. Install

Insert the new position sensor and secure it to the transmission housing.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the wiring harness back into the new sensor.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use the tractor's H-menus or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the stored 2160 fault code.

  8. Calibrate

Perform a transmission/synchronizer calibration procedure if required by the control module to learn the new sensor's physical end-stops.
