Case IH 2170 – ZDC: Configuration Error - Invalid Variant Parameter Configuration
Issue description
The control module has detected a mismatch, corruption, or invalid setting within its programmed parameters. The module does not recognize the configuration data as valid for the specific vehicle variant it is installed on.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Steiger AFS Connect (CVT models)
- Case IH Magnum CVT / Puma CVT (models utilizing the ZDC/VCM architecture)
Check the cause
Verify module history to determine if the ZDC module was recently replaced, swapped from another tractor, or if the tractor recently underwent a software update
Check the battery and system voltage, as a severe low-voltage event during startup or operation can corrupt the volatile memory where variant configurations are stored
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and verify communication with the ZDC module
Use the EST to read the current variant configuration programmed into the ZDC and compare it against the tractor's actual build data (e.g., tire size, transmission type, radar presence)
Repair steps
Connect EST
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Turn ignition ON
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (KL15 powered) to wake up the ZDC controller.
Navigate to ZDC menu
Open the EST software and navigate to the ZDC Controller programming/configuration menu.
Select reconfigure
Select the option to reconfigure or program the module.
Input Variant Parameters
Input or select the correct Variant Parameters that match the specific build of the tractor (this data is usually pulled automatically from the CNH eTIM database or entered manually based on the tractor's PIN/serial number).
Write configuration
Write the configuration to the ZDC module.
Perform key cycle
Once the programming is successful, perform a key cycle (turn the ignition off, wait for the modules to power down completely, and turn it back on).
Clear fault code
Rescan the system and clear the 2170 fault code.
Replace ZDC module if necessary
If the ZDC module refuses to accept the configuration or the code immediately returns, the module's internal memory is likely failed, and the ZDC controller must be physically replaced and reprogrammed.
Parts you might need
(2)ZDC Controller / CVT Transmission Control Module
Specific part numbers are highly dependent on the exact tractor model, year, and chassis serial number. Look up the specific ZDC Controller in the CNH Next Generation Parts Catalog (NGPC) using the machine's exact PIN.
Fuse F-101 (5 Amp)
Check if the module is failing to power up properly during the key cycle.
