Case IH 2179 – Engine Control Module (ECM / PCM): System Too Lean Off Idle Bank 2

The ECM has detected an excessively lean air-fuel mixture (too much air or not enough fuel) on engine cylinder Bank 2 when the engine is operating above idle speed.

   Scan for secondary codes (e.g., P0171, P0174) related to lean conditions

2. 2

   Check for vacuum leaks in the Bank 2 intake system, hoses, and gaskets for unmetered air leaks

3. 3

   Inspect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor for dirt or failure, and monitor the Bank 2 upstream Oxygen (O2) sensor data via live scan

4. 4

   Verify fuel pressure to rule out a weak fuel pump, faulty fuel pressure regulator, or clogged Bank 2 fuel injectors

   Check the ECM for data-processing errors or corrupted software misinterpreting the O2 sensor voltage

   Repair vacuum leaks

   Repair any cracked vacuum hoses or intake leaks found during the visual/smoke test.

   Clean or replace MAF sensor

   Clean the MAF sensor using a dedicated MAF cleaner. If live data shows it is still unresponsive, replace it.

   Replace O2 sensor

   If the Bank 2 O2 sensor is lazy or stuck lean, replace the sensor.

   Clear codes and test-run

   Clear the ECM fault codes and test-run the machine under load (off-idle) to verify the fuel trims return to normal parameters.

   Re-flash or replace ECM

   If the mechanical systems are perfect, the ECM may require a software re-flash or replacement.
