Case IH 2180 (3514.04) - DEC – DEC: Sensor Supply V12S2 - voltage too low

Issue description

The Sensor Supply 6 Circuit (V12S2) is experiencing a voltage drop below the normal operating range. This is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground somewhere in the wiring harness, or an internal short within one of the sensors powered by this specific circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery and base voltage to ensure the machine's batteries are fully charged and the alternator is providing proper voltage, as low system voltage can trigger false supply codes.

  2. Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting sensors on the V12S2 circuit one at a time while monitoring active fault codes or circuit voltage. If voltage returns to normal, the unplugged sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, rubbing, or pinched wires, especially where the harness routes around metal brackets or the engine block.

  4. Perform an ECM pin test by disconnecting the harness from the DEC/ECM and testing the Supply 6 output pin directly. If voltage is still low, the ECM's internal power stage has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Short

    Based on your diagnostic isolation test, locate the internally shorted sensor or the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Repair/Replace

    If a sensor is faulty: Remove the shorted sensor and install a new OEM replacement. If the harness is damaged: Open the wire loom and repair the shorted wire using approved solder and heat-shrink tubing, or replace that section of the engine harness if the damage is extensive.

  4. Reassemble

    Reconnect all sensors and plug the harness back into the DEC/ECM. Reconnect the battery.

  5. Clear Codes

    Turn the ignition on. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive fault codes.

  6. Verify

    Start the engine and verify that the fault code does not return and that the sensors on the Supply 6 circuit are reading correctly.
